What Is Forex Trading?

Forex trading, also known as foreign exchange trading, is the process of buying and selling currencies to make profit from changes in their price. Instead of trading physical items, traders deal with currency pairs like EUR/USD or USD/INR, where one currency is exchanged for another. The goal is to predict whether the value of one currency will rise or fall compared to the other.


How Does Forex Trading Work?

Forex trading works through currency price movement. If a trader believes a currency pair will increase in value, they place a Buy (Long) trade, and if they believe it will decrease, they place a Sell (Short) trade. Profit or loss depends on how much the price moves after the trade is opened.

There are several styles of Forex trading such as scalping (quick trades lasting seconds or minutes), day trading (opening and closing trades within a day), swing trading (holding trades for days or weeks), and position trading (long-term trading over months). Traders use tools like charts, technical indicators, price action patterns, and economic news to make decisions. Platforms like MetaTrader (MT4/MT5) and Trading View are commonly used for analysis and execution. However, Forex trading is not just about strategy—it also requires emotional discipline, patience, and proper risk management techniques such as stop-loss, position sizing, and avoiding over-leveraging.

In some countries, Forex is fully regulated, but in places like India, trading international currency pairs through unregulated brokers is in a legal grey zone. Only INR-based currency pairs like USD/INR, EUR/INR, GBP/INR, and JPY/INR are officially regulated for local retail traders. Because of this, beginners should first practice with a demo account to understand the market before risking real money.
